Blog Description

Welcome to our blog! As seniors here at Washington State University, we've heard the same jokes about living in the Palouse...time and time again...

"So how much time do you spend in those wheatfields...?"

"No wonder you're all alcoholics...there's nothing to do in Pullman except drink..."

...and my personal favorite, a quote from Don James, retired University of Washington football coach: "Attending WAZZU is great preparation for real life. It teaches you not to expect too much."

WELL, while we have as good of a sense of humor as anyone, if not better, we beg to differ. There is plenty to do in Pullman, and we plan to prove it to you. From nightlife, to outdoor recreation, to campus events/involvement, and more, Pullman earned the nickname Pullmania for a reason.

Sure, drinking may be an (albeit large) part of that, but that's the case at most American college campuses. From our last three years in this incredible town, we've got lots of personal experience in finding more to do. In our last year here, we're dedicated to finding even more and sharing it with all of you, if for no other reason than giving you something to share with your parents when they worry about your weekend habits.

Please share this with your friends, and send us messages or comments with any suggestions or requests of things you'd like to see. We want everyone to enjoy Pullman as much as we do!

Need a weekend getaway?

Although many believe that Pullman is a college town swimming in a sea of farm land surrounded by its nothing-ness, Pullman itself is actually the prime starting location to many quick weekend getaways! Here are a few quick-trip locations that will get you out of Pullman, without the price of a plane ticket!

1. Lake Coeur D' Alene
Only a 1.5 hr drive from Pullman, this North Idaho lake has just what you need for a weekend getaway. Whether you like the water sports, hiking, or prefer to shop and dine the night away, CD'A has everything you are looking for! I suggest visiting the website http://coeurdalene.org/ to find out information on lodging, dining and the other numerous attractions!

2. Montana
If you are really looking to get away and relax, there are many locations to visit in Montana! Mountain hot spring resorts, national parks, and ski resorts are calling your name! Go to www.visitmt.com for more information!

These are just a few options that you have to get out of town, and remember there are many more to choose from! Good luck studying and when you have a free weekend, get out and enjoy the surrounding area of Pullman!

Campus PD at WSU

Campus PD is an American television show structured much like the popular COPS series. This particular show focuses on crimes across American college campuses, and in the towns those campuses are in. Washington State University, which has historically been labeled a party school, is featured in the third season of this show. For a good laugh, take a few minutes and watch an episode. A guide to Season 3, found on Wikipedia, is located below.

The Zen Stairwell

WSU has a little hidden secret, the Zen Stairwell, located in the Fine Arts building. Rumor has it that years ago, the stairwell was WSU Administration's solution to the vandalism and graffiti problem on campus. Individuals with a desire to spread their art and messages were directed to fill a designated stairwell with whatever expression they had in mind. This seven story stairwell has become a source of history and philosophical stimulation for many students across many years. Current paintings in the stairwell can be dated back to the early 1990s, but the thickness of the paint on the walls, stairs, railings and even ceilings hint that this tradition has existed for much longer than two decades. Below are a few links to information about this stairwell.

Seattle Times article: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19941225&slug=1949104
Rawr article: http://www.uiargonaut.com/sections/rawr/stories/2011/feb/2411/the_new_wave.html

Zen stairwell is located in the first stairwell of the fine arts building, closest to the CUE. Check it out, maybe add some art of your own, and then come back here, to the Life in Pullmania blog, and let us know what brought you to Zen. Or, if you've been before, let us know your favorite Zen stories. Express away!

Catch Up on Your News with The Daily Evergreen

All students have heard of The Daily Evergreen, but sometimes it can be a pain to find the newspaper stands around campus, and then have to hang on to the papers for the rest of the day. Not to mention, those papers are difficult to hide in class! While we wholeheartedly support paying attention in class, we know there can sometimes be days when you need the break, and what better way to spend that time than reading the student newspaper for updates about the university and about local and general news? Just visit the Daily Evergreen online, right from your laptop or desktop computer, at http://dailyevergreen.com/ and begin reading! If you read something that inspires or angers you, I encourage you to write a letter to the editor. That section is one of my favorites. Horoscopes and Sudoku are a close second and third.

Enjoy!

Paranormal on the Palouse

The spookiest holiday of the year is finally upon us, and today is the day to scare yourself silly. While my normal Halloween routine involves eating lots of fun-size Snickers bars and watching Casper the Friendly Ghost (I know, I'm a baby!), this year I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and force myself to see Paranormal Activity 3.

Pullman Village Centre Cinemas is showing the film at 5:10, 7:40 and 9:50 tonight. If you go, make sure you bring a friend for a hand to hold during the scary scenes! And if you hear someone crying in fear behind you... it's probably me.

Happy Halloween Cougs!

Halloween Costumes!

For those of you who have been participating in "Halloweekend", you know how hard it is coming up with different costume ideas for every night out! Since there's still two nights before the real Halloween, here's some fun and easy costumes you can make quickly, whether you're heading out to the bars or eating candy at home!

Gold Digger
Put on a gold dress. Sprinkle gold glitter in your lip gloss. Paint your nails and a toy shovel gold, and carry it with a bag of gold rocks.

God's Gift to Women
Gift wrap a large box and cut holes in the top and sides for your head and arms. Add a gift tag that says "To: Women" and "From: God."

A Highway
Wear a black shirt with yellow double lines painted down the middle and glue or pin toy cars to the shirt.

M&M
Wear a dress or shirt the color of your favorite M&M. Cut out an "m" in white paper and pin it onto your clothes. Have friends wear different colors to be a bag of M&M's!

A character from Jersey Shore
Wear your trashiest leopard print and clubbing clothes, overload on bronzer (aim to be the color of Cheetos)and go crazy with hair spray and gel!

Halloween Night

In Pullman, Halloween celebrations last for five nights. I've even heard it referred to as "Halloweek" here. Monday nights are normally not a popular night to head out to the bars, but Halloween is most definitely the exception to the rule! Put on your best costume and head out to the bars in town. Stubblefields is opening the dance floor downstairs for all of your dancing needs! There's no cover charge all weekend! Halloween only comes around once a year, don't miss out on the fun!!

Stubblefields is located at 600 NE Colorado Street.

Don't get sick!

Lately, you can't sit through a class without hearing a chorus of coughing and sneezing. Getting sick can really put a damper on your weekend plans, so here's 5 tips to avoid the cold and flu so you can keep having fun!

1. Wash your hands! Those doorknobs in Todd host millions of germs.

2. Don't share drinking glasses. YES, that includes beer pong cups...

3. Sneeze into your upper arm, not on your hand (or on the person sitting in front of you in class!)

4. Disinfect shared surfaces often. Lysol is your friend. And wash that sinkfull of dishes while you're at it.

5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Get enough sleep, drink lots of water, eat your fruits and veggies, and exercise at the rec. A healthy Coug is a happy Coug!

Not 21?

We've all been there...the only one in your group of friends that isn't 21. If you're feeling left out and you want to hang out with your friends 21 and older then Zeppoz is the perfect solution! Everyone is welcome at Zeppoz and it's fun for all ages! Those people of legal drinking age are welcome at the bar and those over 18 are welcome in the casino. Bowling with a group of friends is fun and cheap and a great way to hang out with friends of all ages! Zeepoz is located on 780 SE Bishop Blvd in Pullman and are open Monday-Friday 9 am until 2 am and Saturday-Sunday 11 am until 2 am. You can also visit their website www.zeppoz.com for more information and to see what they have to offer.

Shopping Spotlight: Flirt

It's pretty obvious that Pullman isn't a shopping Mecca, but we make due with what we have! Finding Coug gear is easy with Crimson and Gray and the Bookie close to campus, but Pullman girls were in need of a boutique that sold reasonably priced, fashionable clothes to hold off our withdrawals until we could go back to the big malls at home. Enter: Flirt!

Located on 107 Grand Ave, Flirt sells designer denim, dresses, jewelry, tops, jackets, Cougar clothing, and just about anything else you would find at a big-city boutique! Check it out and be the most stylish girl at WSU!

Animal Love

After a long day of classes and studying, can you think of anything better than snuggling up with a furry friend? Owning a dog or cat in college may be difficult though, as many landlords won't allow tenants to have pets or will charge extra to let you keep one.

So if you're an animal lover in need of some quality tail waggin', a great way to be around pets without owning one of your own is by volunteering at the local Whitman County Humane Society! They are always looking for volunteers to help at the shelter, and you can have the chance to truly make a difference in an animal's life. Who knows, you may fall in love with one and convince Mom and Dad to let you bring him or her home!

Check out the spotlighted animals below, and just try to say no to helping them!

Tired of Studying in the Library?

Ever need a new spot to study? Thomas Hammer Coffee opened a new shop in Pullman on October 11th! The coffee is great and it's a great study environment when you want to get out of the library and head somewhere new. Plus, who doesn't want to curl up in a comfy seat with a warm latte in hand? I know I do! There's plenty of space to spread out and for working on group projects! They're located in 400 E. Main St. on the Pine St. Plaza. Getting to the game at CenturyLink Field

We know all of you are heading over the mountains this weekend to cheer on the Cougars against Oregon State at CenturyLink Field this weekend, but getting there may be a little daunting. Sure, it's easy to get to the west side (just pile everyone into that old Honda Civic and split the gas money!) but once you're in dreary Seattle, how is a broke college student able to get to the stadium? Fear not fans, we have some transportation tips for the budget conscious Coug!

 ST Express Bus Service
Sound Transit bus service offers transportation from areas throughout Pierce, King and Snohomish counties with service every 30 minutes and stops within 3 blocks of CenturyLink Field. Make it a game and sing the Cougar Fight Song every time the bus stops to pick up passengers!
http://www.soundtransit.org

Link Light Rail
The Central Link offers service from Tukwila to Downtown Seattle.  With two stations near CenturyLink Field, this service is a quick and comfortable way to travel.  Visit the Sound Transit website for details on Light Rail ticket and service information.

Sounder Rail Service
From Tacoma and Everett with stops in between, the Sounder Trains will operate for every Sunday game with service to King Street Station, just a football field away from the stadium.
http://www.soundtransit.org

Washington State Ferries
Regular ferry service from Bremerton and Bainbridge Island arrives at Colman Dock on Pier 52, just a short walk to Qwest Field. Riders to West Seattle from Port Orchard and Vashon Island can transfer to Metro buses for quick transit to CenturyLink Field as well. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/

CenturyLink Parking Lots
If you can get parking lot money from mom or dad, get yourself to Royal Brougham St. and park safely!

Get Involved, Cougs!

WSU students can be busy enough balancing school and a social life, but many have found that joining an extracurricular activity is a great way to spend time doing what you love (and it can look great on a resume, too!). Try out a club, intramural sport, or Greek Life, and see how great life is as a multitasking Coug. Check out the links below for some ideas!

Are you a budding journalist? Write for The Daily Evergreen: http://dailyevergreen.wsu.edu/

Musicians, look into joining the Cougar Marching Band:

Accountants can have fun too, when they join the accounting business fraternity Beta Alpha Psi:

Gearing up to "Cear Cut the Cardinal"

Every October there are two main events that WSU students look forward to; Homecoming and Halloween. While the latter isn't due to arrive for a couple more weeks, preparations for Homecoming week are in full swing. Bars are gearing up for "Open 2 Closes", while stores like Crimson & Gray are stocking their shelves for the highly anticipated crowd set to arrive Friday afternoon.

This year the Cougs host the (currently-ranked) no.7 Staford Cardinals, setting the stage for a fast paced Pac-12 showdown on the Palouse. If you plan on coming to Pullman prior to the game on Saturday, check out the link and the picture below to learn more about the many activities going on throughout the week.

Also, be sure to check back in for Homecoming updates next week, and as always, Go Cougs!

Cougar Football Watch Party

Football games are always the highlight of fall weekends. Away games can deprive some fans of the thrill of yelling, "And that's another... COUGAR! FIRST! DOWN!" when another great play is completed, but smart Cougs know how to get their fix even when the team is thousands of miles away.

Many local bars in Pullman offered football watch parties for the WSU vs. Colorado game last Saturday, including The Coug, My Office, and Valhalla. They offered food and drink specials, and a chance to see the Cougs win an amazing game 31-27! Watching football is always more fun when surrounded by other diehard fans... and a refreshing pint of Busch Light doesn't hurt either.

Check out these pictures from Valhalla! And yes, Grandpa Butch came for a visit!
